Pattern Hacking- Learn Methods and Adaptations to Convey Your Design with Clothing Patterns
For Aspiring Fashion Designers | Wardrobe Sewists | Garment Sewing Enthusiasts
Have you wondered how to use and adapt sewing patterns so that they convey your own ideas for the design of a garment? In this online workshop, I’m going to share with you the process I walk my students through to change the design of a pattern to make it your own, individual design so that the garment becomes uniquely your own.
I define “pattern hacking” as changing an existing pattern to make it convey the design you originally intended. This is a creative method and approach to design that incorporates pattern making principles and critical thinking to analyze and change a pattern so that it reflects more of what you want to see in a garment. You will learn how to actually change a patterns design.
With pattern hacking, you can also change the fit, and it incorporates your own creativity in the process. But it uses more creative methods than traditional “pattern alteration” so don’t register for this workshop expecting to learn how to do something like a “full bust adjustment.” Rather, this workshop will teach you a process to approach patterns more fluidly, and change them to suit your original and unique intentions, and incorporate processes we learned in last month’s workshop.
In this workshop, you will learn:
An introduction to the theory of how patterns are designed.
The benefits of using “pattern hacking” to bring your design to the pattern and to life with your sewing and how this method works.
The exact process I walk my students through to adapt, combine, and change a pattern to convey their idea and bring their design to an existing pattern.
Actual pattern adaptations and approaches to get you inspired.
Learn what really can’t be changed on a pattern so you don’t waste your precious time.
When to use “pattern hacking” methods, and how to know when its time to move on, and learn pattern drafting.
This approach will make what you create reflect your own authentic voice, creating clothes that communicate for your own personal story and approach to clothing. And that is what I believe creates the most compelling fashion design.
Are you ready to get started? This method is a great gamechanger and I hope you will join me!
